伝動機構にはヘリカル平歯車を用いる以外にも、標準的な歯形を持つ平歯車も使用可能です。ヘリカル歯車とは異なり、インボリュート歯形の平歯車は歯根が厚いため、歯の摩耗を防ぎます。これらの歯車は、従来型の生産設備で容易に製造できます。インボリュート形状は小規模生産に最適で、最も一般的な平歯車の一つです。

スプライン平歯車

平歯車の種類を検討する際には、2つの違いに注意することが重要です。平歯車（インボリュート歯車とも呼ばれる）は、トルクを発生させ、速度を調整します。自動車のエンジンで最も一般的ですが、日常の電化製品にも使用されています。しかし、平歯車の最も大きな欠点の1つは、その騒音です。平歯車は一度に1つの歯しか噛み合わないため、大きな応力と騒音が発生し、日常的な使用には適していません。
接触応力分布図は、各歯の側面面積と、軸方向およびプロファイル方向の距離を表しています。接触面積が大きいのは、歯車の微細形状によるもので、歯車の中心付近に集中しています。lの値が正の場合、スプライン歯とヘリックスハンドの接合面にずれがないことを示します。lの値が負の場合は、その逆となります。
